Have you ever been discouraged? That’s like asking are you human at all? Only non-living things don’t feel discouraged. Discouragement is a loss of confidence, or loss of interest or approval; to be dispirited or being low in spirit.
Discouragement is not for the weak people alone, everyone goes through it, whether believer or unbeliever, once you’re still within this human form; it is bound to happen at one time or the other. John 16 v 33. Discouragement exposes the strength and character of the individual. May the Holy Spirit guide our hearts through the Word of God in Jesus Name; AMEN.
Causes of Discouragement & Proposed Remedies
It all looks and seem natural for Man to disappoint. It's not far fetched, Man has limited abilities. It is totally wrong to place your entire hope on man. God said it in His Word in Jeremiah 9 v 4 - 5 "Beware of your neighbor! Don't even trust your brother! For brother takes advantage of brother, and friend slanders friend." New Living Translation. The closest people to me are my family then my neighbor. If they cannot be trusted, then no one can. Put your trust in God alone, he will now select faithful men specifically molded and crafted by him to help you out in times of trouble.
High and Unrealistic targets
Another major source of discouragement is setting our targets too high or making unrealistic plans. You plan on saving from your salary monthly for a vacation, but after a few months, your savings account is still very low, almost zero; what could be happening? You label yourself a disappointment for not been able to save. Maybe you should lower the amount you intend to save, prioritize your spending per month, write it down; what you need and don't need. If you're married, itemize how much you spend every month. You might need to scale down the amount you're intending to save. No amount is too small. The journey of a 1000 years starts with one step. The Warren Buffets of this world saved their ways to billionaire status. You're not too young to start now. The reality is that most things that are worthwhile take a lot of effort and time to come to fruition. So be patient! Rom. 11:33
Failure. See 1 Sam. 30:6.
When we feel like we have failed at something, discouragement often follows. However, failure doesn’t really exist, except for the meaning that we give it. How have i conditioned my mental state to handle a glory yet unfolding. According to Ecclesiastes 3 v 1"For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven." New Living Translation. For that which you desperately seek will surely come, it's not just the time yet. A very important thing to avoid is setting or lifting up our soul to vanity. Psalm 24 v 4. The quicker we back down from such high mindedness the better. This is similar to having unrealistic targets, but more dangerous. An example is the Love for money. Money shouldn't be the master, you're the master. Do not be a slave to money. Money should rather answer to you. Having a positive and healthy mindset to everything is key. If we don’t get the result that we want, when we want it, we just need to take new action. Filter the evil voices from our hearts and minds by the Word of God. Exercise helps too. Many lack the mental capacity to handle time delayed occurrences. This is the reason for suicides.
Lack of Vision. See Phil. 4:8, Prov. 29:18, Jer. 1:11-12
You cannot feature in a future you cannot picture. Nothing guarantees a good future like a correct picture (vision). If we are feeling discouraged, think about your vision. Think about what we want to create in our life. We all have creative abilities dwelling within us as individuals. See your vision clearly to fruition. Think on how it would feel like if the image came into reality. What would this mean for us? How would we feel? A sense of joy and fulfillment. Pictures mean a thousand words. I just need one good picture to lift myself up from the ashes of discouragement rather than mumbling or saying more than 1000 words. Once we see our visions pictorially, we feel empowered and our discouragement will dissipate.
Comparing yourself to others. See Num. 13:33
One of the easiest ways to get discouraged is to focus on other people. Why do we get discouraged when we focus on others? Reason is: we generally see their victories, successes, and strengths. We see what they have and what we don’t. We see why they are better than us. When we do this we get discouraged and we feel sorry for ourselves. To focus on something entails channeling a lot of energy, both heart and mind on that particular thing. In the light of what were focusing on, we see it from different angles and make postulations thereby drawing conclusions. In the same manner it happens when we focus on others. We conclude about what they're not, where they currently are, cars they drive and financial status. This is so common on social media with reference to old college mates and contemporaries. That wasted energy should be channeled into our own personal developments, channeled into our own hopes, channeled into our dreams and aspirations.
The Rules of been happy
What rule do we make to be happy? I remember sometime ago, i was a fan of a particular football team. I often eagerly await watching them play, and i feared them loosing any match because i knew what would follow. I will be SAD all through. I noticed that this pattern was dictating my day and subsequent days following. Going forward, i painfully toned down my fanatical following, defined what it meant by win or loose and telling myself that the outcome of the team's matches wouldn't dictate my happiness. It worked and am better for it. I have heard stories of people committing suicide because their so called beloved team lost out in a given match. What has to happen for us to feel successful? Is it in our control? It should be, because if it isn’t, then we might be setting ourselves up for failure. We have to live by rules that are within our control.
